Periodicals in the Hungarian Language in the Serbian Part of Banat until 1944
Abstract
This paper systematically examines the Hungarian periodical press published in the Banat region, from the establishment of the first printing house in Veliki Bečkerek in 1847 up to 1944. The main objective is to provide a close insight into Hungarian language publications that, for almost a century, played a significant role in preserving the cultural, linguistic, and national identity of the Hungarian community in this area. The research includes a critical analysis of available bibliographic sources and relevant electronic databases from Serbia. It also examines the collections held by the most important libraries and documentation institutions in Hungary, Croatia, Romania, and Austria. Special attention has been given to locating and identifying lost or partially preserved copies. Their disappearance is a consequence of historical events such as wars, destruction, and natural disasters. The periodical publications included all known titles of calendars, daily newspapers, magazines, and almanacs from this historical period. They also reflected the geographic and cultural environment in which they were printed. Printing houses were often the only institutions fostering the written word in certain eras. These houses served as the foundation for establishing and developing other cultural institutions, such as reading rooms, theater troupes, and Sokol societies.
