The Library as an Environment for Informal STEM Learning
Abstract
The paper focuses on exploring informal education of library users through the implementation of various STEM programs in public libraries. The STAR_Net project represents an example of structured support for librarians in delivering such programs through networking and professional training. This is reflected in two virtual environments: a community of librarians and STEM experts, as well as a collection of practical STEM activities designed for creating workshops for children and adults, covering topics such as astronomy, biology, technology, engineering, environmental protection, and related fields. Traveling exhibitions accompanied by appropriate STEM programs, as the most complex segment of the project, are aimed at fostering learning through discovery, play, and interaction in a supportive atmosphere with librarians acting as facilitators. The theoretical framework of the project views libraries as environments for informal STEM learning that provide opportunities for the development of scientific literacy, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and the establishment of social connections. Experience gained during the project implementation indicates the presence of so-called “accidental librarians” without formal qualifications for leading STEM programs and, consequently, the emergence of anxiety due to demands of a new professional role. In order to achieve an appropriate level of quality, it is essential that librarians demonstrate sensitivity, motivation, and develop cooperation with professionals and scientific organizations. The aim of the paper is to highlight the potential of libraries in fostering scientific literacy, particularly among children and young people, and to provide librarians with encouragement and guidance for independently designing and facilitating STEM workshops.
