Russian State Library –
from Museum Fund to the Collection of National Significance

Summary

This work describes the development and collections of the Russian State Library in Moscow, from the foundation of the Rumyantsev Museum in Saint Petersburg in 1828, to the present day. Special attention is given to the period of the sixties of the 19th century, when the fund of the Rumyantsev Museum was relocated to Moscow, where it represented the fi rst museum collection in the Russian Empire. The Russian State Library was the fi rst public library in Moscow, according to the regulations of that time. Manuscripts and printed publications from diff erent periods of Serbian history were, and still are, part of its fund.
After the revolution of 1917, new tasks were set before this institution, in accordance with the state system which, despite adjustments in certain periods, survived until the beginning of the nineties of the 20th century. The Second World War was the time of great diffi culties for the Russian State Library, but in spite of all, its collections were saved. New circumstances have made the Russian State Library change its status and role once again. Today, it is a modern library and information center whose role has been developing successfully, due to the use of new information technologies of the 21st century.
