The First Head of the Library of the Faculty of Law, University of Belgrade

Summary

This paper aims to shed light on the life and work of Dušica Guteša (Belgrade, 1914 – Belgrade, 1994), the first head of the Library of the Faculty of Law, University of Belgrade, about whose contribution to the restoration and development of the Library after the Second World War there are no written traces. By systematizing her work, we can give her credit for the creation of the Author and Subject catalogues of books and the Subject and Systematic catalogues of articles from foreign and domestic magazines. We highlight the responsible and continuous implementation of the procurement policy to enrich the book collection, as well as the introduction of new Rules on the Library’s Work and their adaptation to the emerging needs of users and employees. By launching a newsletter of new books and magazines and regularly submitting it to the Bibliographic Institute of the FNRJ for central catalogues, Dušica Guteša made the Library of the Law Faculty of the University of Belgrade visible and accessible outside the framework of the institution. Involvement in the establishment and work of the Society of Librarians of the National Republic of Serbia and the zealous publication of reports on its work in the “Librarian” journal show her willingness to make a personal effort to benefit the librarian profession. Her commitment to the education of professional staff to work in libraries shows her awareness of the necessity of quality for the development of Serbian librarianship. With her enthusiasm and professional actions, constant training and tireless commitment, she laid new foundations for the largest higher education library in Serbia thus writing important pages of its recent history.
