The Social Function of the University Library: the example workshops for education of migrants and local citizens

Summary

This paper will consider the role of the library regarding its social functions and the necessary steps it takes from regular work to meet society and the problems and challenges it faces. The project currently being implemented at the University Library „Svetozar Marković”: Migrants and local communities actively growing together for inclusive societies (MILAGRO), funded by the European Union, will serve as a template. The proposal for this project received extremely high marks from the evaluators precisely because it concerns academic institutions that step out of their everyday curricula and tackle current social challenges. Libraries, as central points of the future knowledge society, have a particularly emphasized role in this regard. In the context of the work packages of a specific project, the interdisciplinary character of the library which can respond to the complex requirements of the project is particularly expressed. Going through 7 work packages, we will also consider the social function of the library in today’s technologically constantly changing social context.
