Abstract
This paper deals with the libraries’ Internet activities and library’s mission on the Internet and presents the most important characteristics of library websites: usability, administration and development, Internet marketing and evaluation. In addition, ways of using social websites and other services, such as chat and email service, in fulfilling the mission are presented. The second part shows the results of the evaluation of the websites of Serbian libraries. Analyzed are: traffic, usability, online marketing, employees and other important factors. The last part of the paper gives an overview of good practices of foreign libraries, which should serve as benchmarks for the development of websites of Serbian libraries.
It is concluded that websites of Serbian libraries do not have enough visitors and do not correspond with modern standards and requirements of the Internet and Internet users. Furthermore, it is concluded that current situation is consequence of the lack of theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of management of library websites in Serbia, and the best way to improve the situation would be education of the employees in this particular area.
