Copyright Protection on the Internet
|
Summary
The rapid development of technology brings many benefits, but also creates numerous options for abuse and infringement of
copyrights. The emergence of the Internet has enabled easier and faster way of finding information and more efficient use of different
types of contents. On the other hand, modern information and communication technology has opened the way to unauthorized use
and copying of a variety of contents protected by copyrights, but available on the Internet. Users often make mistakes believing that
everything from the Internet may be used, copied and further distributed free of charge. However this is not always the case. All
contents on the Internet are protected by copyrights and must be used in accordance with the law, regardless of whether they are
marked by the label of ownership or not. Text contents may be protected by different types of licenses that establish the manner
and conditions of their use. Digital contents may be protected by technological protection measures, tools and systems for digital
copyrights management. Digital rights management (DRM) is control of usage of digital contents by preventing access, copying
and converting to other formats. In this regard, it is possible to use digital object identifiers (DOI), digital signatures and digital
watermarks. On the Internet there are also the works whose copyright protection has expired thus they became public domain,
available to all and free for use without any compensation. The works that are on the Internet are creations of a particular author and
his own intellectual property, therefore they may not be used randomly, but in the manner determined by the author himself.
