Typography of Vinča Signs and Their Transposition
into a Modern Typographic Form
|
Summary
The archeological site of Vinča is one of the richest locations with findings from the Neolithic period in Europe. Since the very
discovering of the locality, scientists could not agree on the interpretation of signs i.e. carvings on the Vinča objects, on the pottery
in the first place but on the zoomorphic and anthropomorphic figurines as well. Carved signs were found both on sacral and utility
objects. Discovery of more than 1.200 carvings makes the Vinča culture particularly interesting, while frequent appearance of signs
implies their conventional use. Some scientists explain the carvings on ceramics as owner’s or potter’s marks, carved marks, bail
marks, sacred script and pre-writing, while some of them consider the Vinča signs as phonetic alphabet. Without further dealing
with the meaning analysis of the Vinča signs, the authors focus on their structure, shape, typographic elements, as well as on their
development and adjustment to existing, contemporary typographical processes, which, using modern software and computer systems,
provide creation of the usable font that can be incorporated into modern operating systems. This would increase the value of what
already exists in the form of documented research, and contribute significantly to popularization of the Vinča culture. It would also
create conditions for using this developed font in modern computer systems and software, thus the idea of the Vinčica font creator,
that the font can be used by those doing research on Vinča culture and literacy, as well as all the others interested in archeology,
would be realized.
