MARC records editing

Summary
One of the major requirements of the contemporary library information systems as well as the information systems in general is developing user interface that are designed to fulfill the user i.e. librarian needs. This paper gives the analyses of the user interface for entering bibliographic data by MARC standard. The analysis includes user and software requirements of the editors for MARC records as well as the overview of the existing software solutions in the field. There are generally two types of user interfaces for editing MARC records today. The first one uses display forms with labels and fields for text entering and second ones are editors for direct record editing. Using Eclipse, one of the best known editor for creating programming code, in the fifth version of BISIS library information system we created an Editor for MARC 21 records. In developing this editor we opted for the second approach i.e. direct record editing. The suggested editor encapsulates all features specific to the contemporary editors for structured data such as content assist, syntax highlighting and real-time validation. At the end, we can say that suggested editor, with some minor improvements may overcome all drawbacks of existing software solutions in the field.
