Europeana and Its Metadata Models

Summary
This work is a review of the metadata models Europeana Semantic Elements (ЕSЕ) and Europeana Data Model (ЕDМ),
used for the purposes of Europeana portal. In the fi rst part, the work gives an overview of the Europeana portal, its
beginnings and development, and the services it provides to users. It deals with the concept of metadata and the way
of delivering institutional metadata to Europeana, covering the data aggregators’ roles and functioning of the entire
system. It explains the ways in which Europeana solves the problem of interoperability among the records coming
from various cultural-historical and scientifi c institutions. The ESE model, which is currently used as the solution of
interoperability problem, is overviewed together with its structure, properties, implementation and imperfections.
The EDM, a new way of structuring resources’ metadata, based on Semantic Web principles, is also presented in brief,
with emphasis on some of its great potentials. In the concluding part, the work discusses the possible evolution of the
method of production and manipulation of library and other institutional metadata, in terms of their enrichment and
linking to other relevant information.
