Information Literacy for the Third Age:
the Courses 65+ in the Belgrade City Library
|
Summary
This paper is a review of the activities conducted in the Belgrade City Library during preparation, implementation and
promotion of the program 65+, dedicated to the library members older than 65 years of age. Initiated after signing the
protocol on cooperation with the Secretariat for Social Affairs of the City of Belgrade, the program has been implemented
since 2010. It consists of, among the other things, free and permanent library membership and free courses in information
literacy. On the basis of the results of previously conducted research, librarians created the training plan according to which
the training should be performed five days a week, in groups of up to 14 participants. The training program covers the basic
skills needed to use computers for information retrieval and daily electronic communication. For four years, more than 1.700
students in seven municipalities of Belgrade have successfully completed the training. The oldest students are sometimes
aged over 90. They are very persistent and, despite the objective aggravating circumstances, manage to complete the training
successfully. The library gets new users who, in addition to the traditional, now use the electronic services as well. The
project has been presented at several national and international professional conferences, and it has always attracted a lot of
attention.
