A Brief Review of the Published Resources on Information Literacy in Serbia
|
Summary
This paper analyzes literature, i.e. the published resources on the topic of information literacy that have been created in Serbia since 2007. The immediate cause for conducting the analysis is issuing the UNESCO publication Overview of Information Literacy Resources Worldwide, with the list of 23 bibliographic units describing material in Serbian language: monographs, journal articles, guides, educational courses, seminars, as well as translated international documents and manuals. Treating this list only as an overview of the most important issued publications, rather than as a comprehensive bibliography of works, the authors of the text carry out bibliometric and content analysis of the topics addressed in them and ascertain qualitative shift from getting familiar with the issues, through empirical research, to the theoretical considerations about information literacy competencies. The analysis of the relevant literature, published in Serbian, from 2007 until today, shows that the current position of libraries and librarianship in Serbia reflects all the children’s diseases of the concept and implementation of information literacy. Although the state strategies have not adequately valorized their true potential, nowadays libraries in Serbia operate in a society that shows increasingly clear its strategic commitment to the development of science and tends to invest more into scientific research, education and culture. Library initiatives, project organization, participation in international projects, working in international associations, professional education - show that librarians, with all the objective difficulties, consider information literacy their natural task. The future efforts of libraries and librarians in redesigning their own mission in the domain of information literacy should be clearly directed towards the visible and measurable contribution to the welfare of the community in which they work.
