Library of the Volksbank of Pančevo (One Hundred Years Since Its Foundation)

Summary
The Volksbank of Pančevo was founded by Germans in 1869. In 1914, the Bank established the Library by purchasing new books and buying complete private libraries. Hence, on these books, one can still find preserved bookplates, i.e. labels identifying their former owners. In this way, a rich collection of 7.500 publications was formed. They were mostly in German, but there was also a certain, smaller number of units in Hungarian and Serbian. In the fund of the Library, there were encyclopedias, bibliographies (166), books on art (228), publications on cultural history (330). German, Serbian and Hungarian literature was represented with 3.672 publications, travel literature with 818, arts with 22, jurisprudence (315), economy, trade, banking (584), natural science (407). Collection of periodicals consisted of local newspapers: 206 volumes of various trade newspapers with 102 issues, 81 volumes of daily newspapers with 36 issues. After confiscation of the Volksbank in 1944, this worthy fund came to the City Library. Considering their content, illustrations and artistic graphic design from the beginning of the 20th century, the books from the Library of the Volksbank still possess an exceptional bibliophilistic value.
