Historical and Contemporary Research of Cataloguing and Bibliographic Processing
of Non-Book Materials in Serbian Libraries

Summary
This work documents the non-book materials of Serbian libraries, as a representative resource in discovering the national and regional history. Procurement, proper cataloguing and bibliographic processing of non-book materials and their adequate storage enables creation of personal, regional and national bibliographies in Serbian culture. In Serbian librarianship, local scientists have been interested in creating a directory of atlases, lithographs, printed musical contents and documents on a wide range of themes, from the time of Hilandar book treasury to the modern digital era of storing data. The National Library of Serbia, The Matica Srpska Library and public libraries throughout Serbia have been using traditional modes of gathering materials, storing and categorizing non-book materials, as well as creating directories and bibliographies, processing information and presenting it in the form of collections, catalogues, photo books, picture cards, atlases and geographic maps. Their main goal is promotion of cultural and historical heritage of the Serbian people. As informational documents of great importance in national and regional libraries of Serbia, non-book materials are being recorded from the very beginning of Serbian librarianship. In this work crossing the criteria of national and local aspects of library operation has been conducted by the experts from The Matica Srpska Library and The Užice Public Library. The work justifies the interest of generations of researchers in non-book materials placed in the libraries of Serbia. During the 20th century, in the history of Serbian librarianship non-book library materials were used only sporadically as a source of bibliography. Calendars, maps, musical and graphic cards, have been pushed through Serbian library theory and practice, with no little effort. Exhibition catalogues, calendars, atlases, printed musical contents and digital contents and databases, are summed up and stored in Serbian national and public libraries. The Matica Srpska Library in cooperation with the National Library of Serbia intends to gather the mandatory copies from our territories and distribute them all over the world. Cataloguing and bibliographic processing of non-literary materials depends on the consistent application of international library standards and their specific reflection on informational systems in Serbian libraries.
