Methodical Practice in School Library

Summary
In order to educate modern, competent, graduate professionals, the LIS Department of the Belgrade Faculty of Philology has been searching for a new educational paradigm. Therefore, it has developed the subject Methodical Practice - Demonstration Classes, within the program of postgraduate master studies. Due to its specific features, the Methodical Practice became recognizable among courses in the master studies. The general aim of practical classes is to enhance students’ understanding of methods of work of a school library. Their purpose is to familiarize students with practical work tasks that are important from the point of view of professional studies, as well as with applying knowledge and skills in practice. During the practical classes, students develop their skills, keep a day-to-day diary, visit classes, discuss and evaluate the observed classes, prepare and perform their demonstration exam classes. Such hands-on experience in the practical classes will help students to evaluate different methods of work and thus contribute to the shaping of their professional attitudes. The practical classes help students to apply their theoretical knowledge and acquire basic professional experience for their teaching practice. They also help students to form the basis for the further development of their professional competence. The subject Methodical Practice - Demonstration Classes points to the necessity of practical training in the academic education of students, as well as to the importance and the opportunities of active involvement of school libraries in curricular and extracurricular activities. Such a conception of this subject has a significant role in students’ training for the future educational work. Students expand their knowledge in the field of school librarianship. New skills and experiences can increase the opportunity for better employment.
