Ergonomic Conditions of Working with Computers in Serbian Libraries

Summary

The entire library and information science profession has irreversibly stepped into the automated performance of all its activities. Library job, being performed with the help of computers, implies a very hard work which, if not followed by certain precautions in order to annul adverse effects, can cause relatively harmless as well as very serious health problems. The last few years a great attention has been paid to ergonomic standards that have to be met at the workplace in order to bring about the high level productivity of healthy employees. This paper presents these standards, importance of their implementation and consequences of their neglect. It also describes working conditions in Serbian libraries and injuries that can happen as the result of ignoring the basic ergonomic requirements and measures of prevention recommended by experts.
