MBS Database - Statistical Data on Academic Libraries
on the Territory of Central Serbia

Summary

In 1974, according to the Statute of the University of Belgrade, the University Library „Svetozar Marković” became coordinating library for all the libraries of the University. Its coordinating functions are defined on the basis of the Law on Library Activities (1994) and the Law on Library and Information Science Activities (2011), while its statute (2016) specifies its libraries coordination activities. In the third paragraph of the Article No 10, the Statute of the University Library „Svetozar Marković” imposes an obligation to maintain a database on organizations performing library activities. Library Network of Serbia (MBS) is a database designed for collecting, processing and presentation of statistical data on libraries in Serbia. Due to inefficiency of this database and impossibility to obtain relevant statistical data using the MBS reports, in the University Library „Svetozar Marković” statistics are often, depending on the type of desired data, done „manually”. Taking into account that it is coordinating library for a significant number of libraries, this is a time consuming and laborious task, which calls into question purposefulness of the existence of the base itself, because it does not provide all the desired data by simply placing query. The work presents tabular data for academic libraries obtained from MBS reports, using terminology used in the database, in order to show obsolescence of this base and its shortcomings.
