Yugoslav Library Association and Serbian Library Association: Continuity of Professional Associations
Summary
The Yugoslav Library Association, i.e. its Belgrade Section, operated in Belgrade from the end of November 1929 to
the beginning of 1941. The important goals set by the Association have not been achieved, and due to the changing
political, social and economic circumstances after the Second World War, its work remained little known to the later
generations of librarians.
The author of this paper starts from the hypothesis that the period between the two world wars was – judging
by professional actions initiated in complex political and modest economic conditions – the time of ascent of
Serbian librarianship, and that the visions of the former librarians were embedded in the foundations of the postwar
development of this profession in our country. As we approach the anniversary, seven decades of work of the
Serbian Library Association, we find it necessary to draw attention of the professional public to the existence of
the professional association that preceded it, as well as to the possibility of moving the date of foundation of the
association for the entire two decades backwards.
